The historic centre is worst between 11am and 4pm when the day-trip cruise crowds are in town — plan sightseeing around it, not through it.

Plan around

Cruise-ship day-trippers: Most of the midday crush arrives by coach from Messina and Catania. Visit Isola Bella and the Teatro Antico before 9am or after 5pm, and skip Corso Umberto between 11am and 4pm — the side streets running off it can feel surprisingly calm even in August.
Ferragosto and the Italian summer: August is the busiest month of the year, peaking around Ferragosto (15 August). Book restaurants, beach clubs and experiences well ahead. If you're staying several nights, use the busiest midday hours for a long lunch, the pool or the beach, and return to town once the day-trippers leave.

Not set on July?

Long, warm evenings, a fully open town, and none of June's festival-driven price spike.

Sea and air are still summer-warm, but the Film Fest and Ferragosto rush have both passed.
