Rooftop view over Porto, the Douro River and the Dom Luís I Bridge

Destination

When should you visit Porto?

Porto is a historic city on the Douro River, known for its tiled façades, traditional restaurants and port wine cellars. Summer is the driest period, while autumn and winter bring considerably more rain. June stands out for the São João celebrations, but the best month depends on whether you prioritise weather, lower prices, fewer crowds or local culture.

My recommendation

June

June combines long days, relatively low rainfall and the São João celebrations on the night of 23 June. It is not the cheapest or quietest option, but it offers a strong balance of sightseeing conditions and local culture.

Plan around

What to know before you book

São João

Night of 23 June

Porto celebrates its biggest annual street festival with music, food, dancing and fireworks over the Douro. Expect a lively city centre and increased accommodation demand. Book early if you want to be there.
Primavera Sound

June, dates vary by year

The music festival takes place at Parque da Cidade and attracts visitors from outside Portugal. Check the official programme for the year of your trip before booking.
Douro Valley Harvest

Late summer to early autumn

The grape harvest offers a reason to explore the vineyards and wine estates east of Porto. Timing depends on the weather, grape variety and individual winery, so confirm dates directly before planning a visit.

Plan around the weather

Porto is best explored on foot, but its steep streets and riverside viewpoints are less enjoyable in heavy rain. Summer is the safest bet for dry-weather sightseeing. Outside that period, leave room in your itinerary for wine tastings, museums and long lunches. The Atlantic coast is worth visiting in summer, although the water stays cool.

View from Vinum in Vila Nova de Gaia across the Douro towards Porto

Founder note

“Go to Vinum for a proper meal, an excellent selection of port and wine, and a fantastic panoramic view across the Douro towards Porto. The restaurant combines Portuguese and Basque influences and sits beside Graham’s historic port wine cellars. It is a great spot for a long lunch or dinner.”
