When should you visit Chicago?
Weather, crowds, prices and events for all twelve months — and one clear recommendation.
My recommendation
May
Chicago’s best weather window — warm days, cool evenings, before the humidity and crowds of summer arrive. This is my favorite city in the US, and May is when I most like being here.
Where I’d stay: the Waldorf Astoria Chicago — a limestone Beaux-Arts tower in the Gold Coast with residential-scale suites.
Least crowded
January
The dead of winter; museums and galleries are nearly empty.
Best weather

Best value
January
The lowest hotel rates of the year.

Plan around
What to know before you book
- Lollapalooza
- Grant Park and the downtown lakefront get packed for four days; hotel rates hit their yearly peak citywide, not just near the park.
- Chicago Marathon
- 50,000+ runners and major road closures across the Loop that weekend — books out fast even though October overall is a quiet month.
- Christkindlmarket
- Daley Plaza and the Mag Mile turn festive; a moderate crowd and price bump, nothing close to summer levels.

Founder note
“My go-to rooftop bar in Chicago: Terrace 16. Order a Negroni — the view over the river and the skyline makes it worth the trip up.”
