When should you visit Cape Town?
Cape Town is a destination where timing can transform your trip. Summer brings warm, dry weather and long days for beaches, coastal drives and outdoor dining, while autumn offers comfortable conditions for exploring the city and nearby wine regions. Winter is cooler and wetter, but often quieter and potentially better value. Spring brings milder weather, seasonal wildflowers in suitable areas and opportunities to spot whales along parts of the coast. Discover the best time to visit Cape Town by comparing monthly weather, crowds, prices and seasonal experiences.
My recommendation
March
March is a strong all-round choice for Cape Town, combining warm conditions with generally low rainfall compared with winter and excellent opportunities for beaches, hiking, coastal drives and wine tasting. Summer holiday demand usually eases, although major events can make particular weekends busier and more expensive.

Plan around
What to know before you book
- Summer winds and festive crowds
- Cape Town’s summer is generally warm and dry, making it ideal for beaches, coastal drives and outdoor dining. The festive holiday period is particularly busy, and strong south-easterly winds can affect outdoor plans. Book early for late December and early January.
- Major sporting events
- The Cape Town Cycle Tour and Two Oceans Marathon attract large numbers of participants and spectators. In 2027, the Cycle Tour takes place on 14 March, while the Two Oceans Marathon’s half-marathon and ultra-marathon take place on 3 and 4 April respectively. Check the official calendars for your travel year, as dates change and road closures may affect your plans.
- Winter wildlife and quieter travel
- Winter is cooler and wetter, but can offer quieter attractions and potentially better accommodation value. Southern right whales may be seen along parts of the coast during the broader winter-to-spring season. Wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions, so avoid planning around guaranteed sightings.
