The Acropolis and Odeon of Herodes Atticus lit up at dusk

Destination

When should you visit Athens?

Athens is not just an Acropolis stopover. Ancient ruins sit beside neighbourhood tavernas, rooftop bars, contemporary galleries and late-night streets, while the Athenian Riviera and Saronic Gulf are close enough to turn a city break into a beach-and-city trip. The timing matters: summer brings intense heat and the heaviest visitor pressure, while spring and autumn make walking, sightseeing and long outdoor evenings much easier.

My recommendation

October

October is Athens at its most balanced: warm enough for rooftop drinks and outdoor dinners, cool enough to spend hours walking between the Acropolis, Plaka and the city’s neighbourhoods, and noticeably calmer than the summer peak. The sea is still relatively warm early in the month, while the worst of the July–August heat has passed.

Least crowded

January

January is one of Athens’ quietest periods outside the Christmas and New Year holiday window, with cooler weather but much easier access to the city’s major sights.

Best weather

October

October brings mild daytime temperatures, warm afternoons and far less punishing heat than midsummer, making it one of the strongest months for exploring Athens on foot.

Best value

January

January is generally the strongest low-season option for accommodation and city-break value, although weather is cooler and wetter than in spring or autumn.

This is Athens City Festival

May

Athens’ major spring city festival fills neighbourhoods, squares and public spaces with concerts, street parties, exhibitions, food events, walks and outdoor activities. The festival runs throughout May, with the exact programme changing each year.
Athens Epidaurus Festival

June–August

The city’s major summer cultural season brings theatre, music, dance and contemporary performance to venues including the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Pireos 260 and ancient theatres around Athens and Epidaurus. It is one of the best reasons to choose Athens in summer if you are travelling specifically for culture.
Greek Orthodox Easter

March–May, date varies

Greek Orthodox Easter is one of the country’s biggest annual celebrations. Holy Week brings religious processions, candlelit services and traditional food, but the exact dates move each year and accommodation demand can increase around the holiday.
Athens International Marathon

November

The Athens Marathon follows the historic route from Marathon to central Athens and creates a major citywide sporting weekend, with road closures and additional activity around the finish area. Choose November for the atmosphere if you want to be part of it; avoid race weekend if you want completely unrestricted sightseeing.
